How Many Teams Are Participating?
In 2026, 48 teams will compete in 104 matches. The number of teams who participate in the World Cup has grown over the years. With more teams and more matches than ever, fans get to enjoy a longer tournament, representation for historically underrepresented countries, and an extra round of elimination games.
How Do Teams Qualify for the World Cup?
The road to the World Cup is a long one. The first spot in the World Cup goes to the host country. Because there are three hosts, each will have automatic spots in the World Cup.
The next thing to know is that the world of competitive soccer is divided into six regions, called continental confederations, each containing its own national teams: UEFA, CONMEBOL, CAF, AFC, CONCACAF, and OFC. Teams qualify over several years by earning spots at regional tournaments hosted by their continental confederations. Each of the confederations hosts its own group and playoff matches to determine 43 of the 48 teams that will go to the World Cup.
During the group stages of qualification, teams earn three points for each win and one point for each tie. Each confederation has a set number of World Cup slots to give out. Rather than sending a single regional team, each country competes within their region’s tournament format. The top-performing countries with the highest point totals in their respective groups secure their country’s spot either in the World Cup or in their region’s playoff phase.
In some confederations, when the group stage ends, the tournaments switch to a regional playoff format, a high-stakes, single-elimination bracket that determines who moves forward to the World Cup.
After the regional tournaments are over, two more spots are filled by the teams that win the intercontinental playoffs, an intense six-team knockout tournament that gives teams who just barely missed qualification a chance to fill the last two spots in the World Cup.
